Ishani Ganguli, MD

BIO:

Ishani Ganguli MD MPH is an Assistant Professor of Medicine, health services researcher, and a practicing primary care physician at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She received her AB, MD, and MPH from Harvard University and completed internal medicine/primary care residency and health policy and management fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. Her research focuses on the payment, delivery, and value of primary care, the use and consequences of low-value care, and gender equity. Dr. Ganguli serves as an Associate Editor at JAMA Network Open. She is also a former journalist who has written about science and health care for The Boston Globe, Reuters, The New York Times, and The Washington Post, among other publications.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the common phenomenon of the “cascade of care” – a succession of medical services triggered by an index medical test or treatment that is often fueled by the desire to avoid even the smallest risk of a serious condition.
  • Review the literature to date about prevalence and impact of these cascades, their underlying drivers, and how to mitigate them
  • Reflect on our own practice and approach to cascades.
