Dr. Puri’s academic interests center on improving awareness of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and to prevent progression of CKD to kidney failure, particularly in those at higher risk for progression of disease, through patient education, engagement, and activation. Dr. Puri is a Senior Bucksbaum Scholar who has been supported by the Bucksbaum Institute to investigate strategies to improve doctor-patient communication in the CKD clinic. He also collaborates with and mentors faculty in other sections in the Department of Medicine in research around patient education and health disparities in patients with CKD. Dr. Puri’s goal is to improve the care and outcomes of patients with CKD by understanding those issues that support or prevent patient engagement and the delivery of compassionate and effective healthcare. Complementary to these efforts, Dr. Puri serves as the President of the Board of Directors for the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois whose mission is to improve the health and well-being of people affected by kidney disease. He also serves as a mentor in the ASN Kidney TREKS (Tutored Research and Education for Kidney Scholars) educating medical students from all parts of North America when they attend the program each summer at the University of Chicago. At UChicago Medicine, Dr. Puri serves as a physician-leader working to improve the delivery of healthcare to the community by engaging physicians and other healthcare providers in the development and implementation of strategies to improve patient access to high-quality and high-value care.
