PROMOTING ADVANCE CARE PLANNING
National Healthcare Decisions Day
Annually Recognized: April 16
Started in 2007, National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) has been celebrated as a day to inspire, educate and empower the public and healthcare providers about the importance of advance care planning (ACP). Research shows that almost 9 out of every 10 people are aware of advance care planning and believe it is important. However, only about 3 out of every 10 people have taken part in the process or completed any advance directives. This includes many medical professionals. Only about 6 out of every 100 UChicago Medicine patients have a Healthcare Power of Attorney (HPOA) on file.
For the third year, UChicago Medicine joins the yearly project as a step to changing how we think about advance care planning in our health system. The Center for Healthcare Delivery Science and Innovation (HDSI) is working across the health system to help people feel more comfortable in talking about advance care planning (ACP). Please take part in this very important project to help everyone choose a healthcare power of attorney (HPOA) and talking about ACP.
